When using a slow weapon that tends to kill in 1 blow like eg the sledgehammer, it is very obvious that damage is dealt at the start of the melee attack sequence, not when the hit is actually hitting.
If it's hard to do otherwise, it's doesnt really matter too much when the actual damage is dealt, but the enemy graphics should preferably remain looking "alive" until the "hit" of the attackmotions is reached.
