Currently all sounds are played at the same volume.

This may cause a weird impression, because one hears allied NPCs shoot bots at the other end of the map as if they were standing directly next to one.

My request here is to decrease the volume if for sounds whose sources are far away from Tux in order to
1) cast a more realistic atmosphere
2) clear out the confusion of how near the source of the sounds is

Probably some formula could be made use off.

Perhaps something could be done to make sounds stereo as well?

Our sound effects suck so badly I wouldn't know where to start the improvements.
Volume = 1/distance sounds like a good place to start, though. 3D position would be good as well (though I don't think we can do that with SDL_mixer, but someone should investigate the solutions).

Or switch to OpenAL ? It's very easy to create 3D positioned audio sources with OpenAL.
