While it may be desirable to have a single save structure, it is commonplace for RPGs to support multiple saves. This might be helpful in the event that a player makes a bad decision and would not have to completely start over - skill allocation, purchase something, choose an unfortunate dialog option, etc.

I posted issue 527, which is a duplicate of this.
