I've often had to go to the menu to remind myself what items I'm looking at in each slot during the first let's say 5 hours of gameplay.

I wouldn't say this is an issue. It does not take long for the graphics to settle in your visual memory and hovering over the various items there shouldn't take less time than opening inventory and hovering there.
